Decades ago Walkman was a brand associated with cassette tapes. The brand later evolved to CD Walkman and Video Walkman. In 2005, big time mobile phone manufacturer, Sony Ericsson, integrated the Walkman into their mobile phones. The company claims to have sold 130 million mobile phones of this type. The company believes that among consumers there is still a great demand for Walkman phones. This is why they decided to design and produce another type of Walkman phone – the Sony Ericsson Zylo. Although the device is not yet available in the market, the company unveiled some of the device’s features. Below are some of the descriptions of the phone.
The Look
This mobile phone which may come in casing of colors jazz black, chacha silver or swing pink is a rectangular device with contoured edges. The handset comes in dimensions of 103 x 52 x 11.5 mm. It weighs 115 grams. The handset’s screen is a 2.6 thin film transistor (TFT) screen. The device has resolution of 240 x 320 pixels; and it can display up to 256K colors. The accelerometer sensor of the screen auto-rotates the images in the phone to either portrait or landscape orientation. What’s more is that the screen of this phone is scratch resistant.
The device has functional keys below its screen. The keys are the same keys found in most models of Sony Ericsson. The keypad of the handset is a slide out type of keypad.
At the back of the phone users can find the 3.15-megapixel camera which has geo-tagging feature. The camera is also capable of recording videos apart from taking still images.
Features
The internal memory of this phone is relatively low, especially for those who love to upload a large number of audio files into their phone. This is why the company placed a slot on the phone for microSD cards that can reach up to 16 GB storage capacity so that users can have the option of expanding their phone’s memory.
The phone can connect and send data to other compatible mobile devices through cellular networks via Class 10 GPRS and EDGE. It can also allow users to connect to the internet and browse through with the 3G HSDPA which can reach up to 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA up to 2 Mbps.
Users who want to connect with other gadgets in the area can do so through the Bluetooth v2.1 technology of the phone for wireless connections, and through the USB v2.0 for cabled ones.
What this device brags about are its audio capabilities. This Walkman phone is the first of its kind to bring to consumers a mobile device that supports the Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) format. The phone also has the TrackID application which is very popular among music lovers. In fact, the company has recorded over 129 million lookups in 2009. The PlayNow music store which is a trademark application among Walkman phones is also present in this device.
Apart from these audio features, the phone also has applications that permit users to access their accounts in Facebook and Twitter.
Pricing
This mobile device which is set to be released during the third quarter of the year is expected to be launched at a lower price than its predecessors.
